Description of Workshop

Despite the use of information technology to address a variety of learning style differences in the classroom, most efforts have not focused on learning style differences associated with the cultural backgrounds of students. It is now possible, however, to develop undergraduate courses that reflect new research about cultural learning and work styles. This presentation will focus on using technology to develop culturally responsive teaching and learning strategies, whether in face-to-face, online, or hybrid courses, and it will offer ideas, resources, and promising practices to get started. Following a 15-minute introduction for on-site session participants, the conversation will be linked to a live, online workshop also presented by the TLT Group.

  • Cultural Diversity,  Pedagogy, Professional/Faculty Development,  Technology Apps (e.g., WBLMSs;  digital streaming, ...)

  • Context:  TMI/TMO - We now have (too many) good options for T/L

  • MUCH greater diversity among students and faculty - cannot rely on homogeneity to sustain good communication

  • Curriculum - Collectively we do not have much expertise about how STUDENTS are RECEIVING/PERCEIVING course content.

  • Newer faculty getting better at perceiving, respecting and dealing with these differences in students WITHIN a traditional classroom....  but it is much more challenging to do so in a purely online environment or hybrid.
